"Pray and Lose Weight!"

One of things that seems to happen to many of us is that we live in a rush, rush world and we tend to take our meal times in this same manner. We have been told countless times it takes 20 minutes for our tummy to know we are full. But, like many others we rush even through meal time. A study where 71% of people who prayed or meditated before their meals lost 10 to 40 pounds and 56% of them kept the weight off for at least six months! Pausing for a few moments of contemplative and sincere prayer gives people time to focus their inner strength on a healthy self image... and calms people who tend to rush through meals, rushing leaves them feeling unsatisfied. We all know what not being satisfied does to our weight loss efforts.

Slow down... live... pray... and lose weight!

Lose 10 Pounds Fast... Without Even Trying!"

Pam Grout is the author of "Jump Start Your Metabolism with the Power of Breath." She found that she lost 10 pounds doing breathing exercises... a weight loss "without even trying." She realized that shallow breathing seems to accompany being overweight. She discovered that DEEP diaphragm breathing improved metabolism and as a bonus... appearance. Pam says the reason this works is that proper breathing contributes to weight loss because it sends more oxygen to the cells, which allows cells to more rapidly burn up and eliminate waste. By cleaning out the cells with each breath... fats do not get the chance to deposit themselves in cells! One exercise she recommends is to sit in a comfortable position and hold your breath for four times as long as inhaling. In other words, if you count to five to inhale, hold the air in to the count of 20 and then slowly exhale to the count of 10. She says that as you exhale, your tummy flattens and forces all the carbon dioxide out of your lungs. Ms. Grout recommends this be done for 10 rounds, three times a day. This exercise is certainly something we all could do any time and with absolutely no expense.

"Feeling Good About Yourself"

A lot of the time we are own worst enemies. Sometimes that little voice that lives deep inside of us is our worst enemy! Would you put up with any friend who criticizes you constantly about your weight and your appearance? I don't think so.

A good plan to avoid this enemy is to make a list of the things that you like best about yourself. For instance...I know I have a nice smile. Everyone thinks I have a great sense of humor. I have my Father's beautiful green eyes. I am very loyal. My co-workers know how dependable I am. Post this list to a place you visit often. (The refrigerator) It will remind you that even though you are not as slim and trim as you would like to be, you are making positive steps toward your goal.

And maybe this list will keep you from opening the refrigerator door. Feeling good about yourself, no matter what stage of weight you might be, is the best step you can take toward your weight loss goal.

"Creative Ways To Dress Up Potatoes"

  Use salsa on your baked potato or low fat ranch dressing (It’s as good as sour cream.)  If you get the "hungries" as soon as you come in the door from work and want to munch while you are cooking your nightly meal, put a potato in the microwave as soon as you get home, cook and eat. The potato will be low in calories, satisfying and filling, which will allow you to cook without cheating, plus you will eat less at your meal as your stomach has already been satisfied to a degree. For that next covered dish dinner you might try a good dip that's low fat/low calorie can be made by mixing fat-free cream cheese with salsa (use whatever spiciness you prefer). Just mix to taste -- then enjoy with raw veggies or baked tortilla chips.

"Jello Desserts"

   Jell-o in pretty parfait/clear glasses in the refrigerator is a sure-fire way to keep you from overindulging on more high calorie ones. This one is great.

Sugar Free Jell-o - Orange Diet 7-up - stirred to release fizz enough water to make up the 2 cups of liquid. Heat one cup - leave the other cup for afterwards. 1 can of mandarin oranges 1 cup of no fat Cool Whip

   Heat the water/7-up. Add the Jell-o and mix and then add the rest of the water/7-up. Take off about 1/2 cup of the Jell-o and then add the oranges. Put the Jell-o with the oranges into the refrigerator to set. Leave the rest of the Jell-o out for the 20 min. Whip the remaining Jell-o with the cool whip and put it on the top. You’ll have a nice layered look. It is delicious and very low in calories.

"Tricks to Make Sandwiches Weight-Loss Friendly

       Here are a few tricks that we can do to make sandwiches more weight loss friendly. Hellman and some other brands put out wonderful mustard called dijonnaise. It sounds like it has mayo in it, but not so, and it's very low calorie. Pita pockets instead of bread are wonderful for making sandwiches. Stuff them full of good crisp veggies and low fat meats/fish. Use a light 7-grain bread to help reduce calories. Another trick is to use fat free plain yogurt instead of mayo. And if you are dining out, remember that a lot of the fast food places have the nutrition value of their products online. So like the Earl of Sandwich include a sandwich on those busy days without worry.

Lose Weight While You're On the Phone”

Have you ever noticed that really thin people very seldom stop moving? In the past we have talked about fidgeting. Don't sit down to talk on the phone. If you have a cell or cordless phone... walk around while talking. Put on a load of clothes. Wipe off counter tops. Dust. By all means, keep moving. And don't just sit during those endless commercials on TV. Load the dishwasher. Get your clothes ready for work. Do anything that will help you to get moving. And having said all of this, why not invest in a pedometer? It will record every step you make, and some even the miles. You will be so surprised at how many steps you do make and it will encourage you to move even more.

Here's to slimming down and feeling great!

Pray and Lose Weight? - Lillie

We have been told countless times it takes 20 minutes for our tummy to know we are full. But, like many others, I too rush, rush even through meal time. He said the possible reason is "Pausing for a few moments of contemplative and sincere prayer gives people time to focus their inner strength on a healthy self image... and calms people who tend to rush through meals. What’s in your Pocket?-

I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

Ø      What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets/

Ø      What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

Ø      What if we flipped through it several times a day?

Ø      What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

Ø      What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?

Ø      What if we gave it to kids as gifts?

Ø      What if we used it as we traveled?

Ø      What if we used it in case of an emergency?

Ø      What if we upgraded it to get the latest version?

This is something to make you go…hmmm…where is my Bible?

"Women of the Red Eyes"

        In the Serengeti, part of our East Lake Victoria Sister Synod, live the “women with the red eyes”. They acquire these eyes from long hours and years cooking over an open fire. The older they become, the redder their eyes become.

            At this time in that area an awful movement is underway by the witch doctors. They are telling people to kill “the women with the red eyes” as they are evil and if they lay their evil eyes on you, bad things will happen. Sometimes these “women with the red eyes” are in danger of death. In fact they are being killed regularly.

           Our bishop has felt a real calling to help these women. There is so much need that other agencies are not addressing this issue. The “women with the red eyes” have learned to trust their Lutheran friends, running to them to escape harm. We do what we can, but there are no funds to help them. Bishop is asking for our help.

         We collected “Pennies for Tanzania” to help buy transportation. Could we continue and change our focus now that a vehicle has been purchased? Your board overwhelming thought this was a wonderful ministry and that we would all support this. So please continue to collect your pennies, and possibly nickels, dimes or even dollars as well and bring them to the convention in Marietta where together we can all join our funds toward helping these women.

They should be honored and cherished for the lives of hard work they have lived. Instead they are fleeing for their lives.  Helping these women is another way for us to walk in faith. May God bless us all in our walks of faith, including the women with the red eyes.

Here’s an Update…as of May 5, 2007 the Women of the Southern Ohio Synod have collected $21,500 to go to build a hospital and provide refuge. Of this money we at St. Paul have sent in at least $500.00 if not more. The safe haven camp for these women is operating and the hospital is built. We are still collecting pennies to help supply the hospital.

Thank you for your help to achieve this!

“SOUTHEAST OHIO MINISTRIES”

Mary Woodward writes:   These are exciting times!  I have been able to rent 7,683 square feet in Caldwell, Ohio for all of my programs.
Volunteers are helping to remodel the new building for Southeast Ohio Ministries.  Watch for news about our Open House in June!

            We will expand the:

  • Dental Health education program;
  • Servant Event/Volunteer program for youth and adults;
  • Disaster Response program; and most importantly
  • Distribution Center.

     The Distribution Center will now be able to serve more people with your help and support!

           I have storage for all items and I am collecting everything now – even school supplies and Christmas decorations in preparation for next August and December!

            The newest program is the Disaster Preparedness Training program.  Lutheran Disaster Response is assisting us to provide training and LSSCO will start scheduling training in all the congregations who are willing to host a training event.

 If your WELCA is able to do any of the following, please contact me as soon as possible:

  1. Conduct an in-gathering of clothing, household items, towels, bedding, appliances, furniture, toys, school supplies, Christmas gifts,  kits, cleaning supplies;
  2. Host a GiveAway Day in your community (I will provide resources form the Distribution Center);
  3. Host a Dental Hygiene Day for youth under age 18 (A dentist and dental hygienist will be scheduled that day.  They will be able to examine up to 22 youth); collect Dental Health Kits;
  4. Host a Servant Event by providing housing and showers for a youth group for 1 week;
  5. Host a Disaster Preparedness Training event in your church (a one day event with a light meal provided); Disaster Response training will be provided to interested volunteers.
  6. Provide volunteers to help in the Distribution Center (a wonderful “WELCA Ladies’ Day Out”); help sort and organize the items for each GiveAway Day.

I will send out my new phone numbers in the new building as soon as the phone system is installed.  In the meantime, feel free to call my home number at 740-838-5005 or my cell phone at 740-509-1132.

            Thank you for all of your help and support!  It means so much to all of the people that we serve in the good times and the bad times!

Thankofferings

Thankofferings help Women of the ELCA participants and their congregations to reflect on their ministries and how they have been blessed. Historically, this long tradition of giving offerings of thanks took place in the fall, showing gratitude for God's blessings in a bountiful harvest and preparing for the harshness that winter would bring.

Women of the ELCA encourages women to give thanks and offerings often because they provide occasions to reflect on women's mission and ministry and to see where new needs are arising. Thankofferings make up part of the organization's annual gift to the ELCA. They also support Women of the ELCA programs and services and help the church reach out in ministry worldwide. This collective giving is at the heart of carrying on a vision for mission and ministry. The heart and cross symbol reminds us that this offering is the result of God's activity in our lives. Sunday, November 19, 2006 is Thankoffering Service!

Stamps for Children

Stamps for Children is a nationwide not-for-profit organization that solicits donations of used stamps (both US and Foreign) and then distributes them free of charge to any children’s group in need. The stamps are used not only to interest children in the hobby, but also as educational aids and for arts and crafts project. Save all the undamaged stamps from your incoming mail. Please DO save space around the stamp when removing it from the envelope. An important thing that the kids learn about stamp collecting is the proper way to remove the stamps from envelopes. Save only stamps that are not torn, ripped, cut or damaged in any way, taped, glued, or stapled, peeled from the envelope, or attached to red or green envelopes. All stamps are wanted, and if the stamps are multiple stamps on one envelope please do not try to cut them apart. Leave them together. There is a large pickle jar in the Kitchen to collect the stamps. Please help save the stamps! Thank You!

Payer Shawls for Kazakhstan-Our sisters in Kazakhstan are German Lutherans living in Russia before WWII; forced to leave everything behind simply for their Christianity. They are allowed no churches, no way to worship, no religious symbols at all, these shawls are designed to embrace as a hug to let them know they are not alone. They can be crochet as well and should be 60” by 20”.  If you have more questions or would like to help please contact Lori at 740.859.2777 or mouser@1st.net THANK YOU!

The SOS WELCA Board met with Bishop Holloway in January and he shared the story of our sisters and brothers in Kazakhstan, which is located in southern Siberia.  They have been in this area since after WWII, isolated and alone, unable to practice their Lutheran faith in churches, unable to have any religious symbols around them.  With the fall of communism, they are allowed to worship, but they have been away from Germany so long, they speak “old German” and there are not many Bibles available to study.  Those Bibles in old German are very rare.  They have nothing and the land is not farmable.  Because Kazakhstan heard and saw our kinship with Mecklenburg, their sister church in Germany and knew Mecklenburg is also a sister church of the Southern Ohio Synod, they have asked for our kinship, too.  The prayer shawls we knit will be something special that they may know the love we have for them in their trials and give them hope to continue.

   As knitters/crocheters we can weave prayers for God’s love and healing into the shawls and create a vessel for God’s mysterious presence in the lives of the recipients.  We are doing this ministry with the hope that they will have hope and know there are other Christians working on their behalf in Southern Ohio. While you are knitting, pray for God’s love to be woven into the yarn and that those who receive the shawl might know God’s comfort and healing presence.  Bring your shawls to Chillicothe.  They will be blessed at our worship service.  This simple act of knitting has allowed people to witness God’s mysterious love in a visible form as shawls are given to people suffering through all kinds of changes in their lives.
